Emerging American artist Graham Murtough (b.1975) is increasingly known for his detailed paintings and drawings that explore an interior world of nature and beauty that is based upon a personal fascination with the transparency between Urban Living and Grand Nature. By concentrating on a part of a tree, a chunk of hot asphalt or a beam of light casting a deep shadow through a branch onto a concrete wall or the forest floor, he isolates patterns from this phenomenal landscape of growth and death and creates an endless variable language of symbols to express the notion of cascading light through space and the collision of seemingly opposite worlds. He then transforms these elemental concepts into paintings and drawings that unveil his love of natural beauty with expressive and hugely atmospheric works.
Graham Murtough lives and works in London. He completed a BA in Fine Art at the College of Santa Fe, Magna Cum Laude, USA (1993 – 97) whilst combining a working visit to the Studio Art Centers International in Florence, Italy (1996).
Previous exhibitions include “In Cascade: Interludes” The Cave, London (2009), “In Cascade” The Tab Center, London (2008), and “Park Road Pilot” Dalston Boys Club (2008).
