Marta Bakst presents a new body of photographic work at Eleven Spitalfields. The pieces attempt to convey an experience of a psychological encounter with space in the modern city, juxtaposed with passing moments from our daily lives that usually go unnoticed.

Subject matter and locations are sourced through the artist’s roving tendency, meandering through landscapes, documenting locations and seeking out the unknown. Bakst often revisits the same places, documenting change and tracing processes that reveal social and personal histories.

The work engages feelings of loss and desire as narrative elements and explores this through photographic forms. Visual connections between images create a delicate strangeness that is suggestive of a dream. A lived experience fragmented by memories of other people and places, creating an alluring evocation of transience and longing.

Digital and traditional photographic processes are both used in production of the work. Collages develop an aesthetic that is reminiscent of times gone by, as undertones of something present beneath the surface, which questions what is beyond the fixed photograph.

Marta Bakst studied BA Fine Art at the Slade School of Fine Art followed by a Postgraduate course at Chelsea College of Art; she currently lives and works in London.
Recent exhibitions include Print Now at Bearspace Gallery, Resort at The Residence and Itchy Scratchy at Permanent Gallery, Brighton.
Last year she exhibited as part of the Photomonth 2009, East London Photography Festival at The Box Gallery.
