Martin Greenland will be exhibiting a number of his paintings at Eleven Spitalfields from Friday 7th March until Thursday 27th March 2008. Visitors will have the chance to enjoy Martin’s paintings for the first time in London since 2002. Some 25 pictures will be exhibited in the gallery space of this residence in the heart of Georgian Spitalfields.
Martin Greenland is a painter of mysterious and evocative landscapes with a strong surreal element. The prices of the paintings range from £750 to £12,500.
Martin Greenland was the 2006 winner of the prestigious John Moore’s Painting Prize. That competition was judged by a panel that included Sir Peter Blake and Tracey Emin.
Sir Peter Blake was effusive about his winning painting. “When it came through as a slide, it seemed to be a very traditional landscape – at that point it could have not got through. And then suddenly, you realise that there is this little tower that looks like a child’s toy …[a] river that looks like snow…suddenly it looks mysterious.”
Born in Yorkshire, Martin achieved a First Class Honours Degree in Fine Art at Exeter College of Art. He now lives in Cumbria. He has exhibited in galleries in London, Liverpool and Kendal.
Martin says “What influences me? The noble ordinariness of things, the subtle changes of the seasons, the different atmosphere of each day and time of day - The layer upon layer of memory, the ability of landscape to express emotion. Everything you see in any of my paintings is important to me, and on a specific note, I am intrigues by the landscape surrounding my home in the Lake District and the close relationship with Nordic landscape that I have discovered.”
Eleven Spitalfields is a New London Gallery that has been established in a private house in Spitalfields. Works are chosen by the owners that complement the environment of their Georgian home.
“An eccentric neo-surrealist…as good a surrealist as we have ever produced in Britain” - Robert Clarke, the Guardian
“I think his painting is superb. The images a striking fusion of arresting myth and exquisite landscape – he gives great picture!” – Willy Russell
